Tariq Malhance
President



Tariq Malhance has overall management responsibility of UIB Capital's principal investment advisory activities in North America. In addition, he is responsible for UIB Capital's developing and advancing Unicorn Investment Bank's complementary service offerings such as commercial and investment banking, municipal and corporate debt offerings, and other Shariah-compliant financial services. Malhance serves as directory of UIB Capital portfolio companies Precision Time, Inc. Sun Well Service, Inc. Sweetwater Dairy Pakistan and also serves as an executive committee member of our portfolio company Ellington, LLC.

Malhance brings to UIB Capital his extensive experience and relationships developed over the past 25 years in a series of positions of increasing responsibility with the City of Chicago, including as City Comptroller, three years as the City's First Deputy City Treasurer, as Managing Deputy Comptroller for Debt and Asset Management, and as Deputy Comptroller for Financial Policy.

During his career with the City, Malhance was tasked with managing its cash flow, debt, and credit activities, and was responsible for overseeing the issuance of approximately $40 billion in bonds to support various City projects. Recently, he led the $1.8 billion securitization of the seven-mile Chicago Skyway tollway to Macquarie Bank of Australia and Cintra of Spain. This transaction was the first of its kind in the U.S. He was also an active trustee member of four of the City's pension funds, which together controlled about $13 billion.

Malhance received his B.S. in Commerce at the University of Karachi, Pakistan, and subsequently received a B.S.B.A. in Finance from Roosevelt University in Chicago. He also earned an M.B.A. from Roosevelt, and went on to earn an M.A. in Economics from the University of Illinois, Chicago. He has also completed his post-graduate coursework for the Ph.D. in Public Policy Analysis at the University of Illinois, Chicago.



Ross Christianson
Principal



Ross Christianson joined UIB Capital in 2008, bringing to the firm a 20-year record of success in private equity investing and corporate finance. With broad industry experience, he has completed transactions in a range of industries including business services, healthcare, marketing services, consulting, oil-field services, manufacturing, and outsourcing. Christianson serves on the boards for Ellington, LLC; Precision Time, Inc., and Sun Well Service, Inc.

Prior to joining UIB Capital, Christianson served as Director with Lake Capital, a Chicago-based private equity group with $1.3 billion under management. While there, he led or was involved with more than 20 investments deploying nearly $500 million of equity capital, and was responsible for sourcing and evaluating investments, structuring transactions, coordinating and managing due diligence, negotiating both transaction and financing agreements, and monitoring portfolio company performance. Additionally, Christianson managed Lake Capital's relationships with lenders and mezzanine investors and developed unique financing vehicles to optimize return on investment while mitigating risk.

Before joining Lake Capital, Christianson spent eight years at GE Capital's merchant banking group, where he sourced, closed and managed leveraged debt and equity co-investments totaling over $500 million. He began his career with GE Fanuc Automation as a financial analyst. He earned his B.B.A. at the University of Iowa and his M.B.A. from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.



Troy Monthye
Vice President



Troy Monthye has experience in private equity investing, investment banking, and management consulting, and has worked with companies operating in diverse industries - technology, healthcare, energy, branded consumer products, and financial services. Monthye is responsible for originating and managing UIB's portfolio investments, and serves on the boards of Open-Silicon and Sun Well Service, Inc.

Before joining UIB, Monthye worked in the corporate finance divisions of American Express and Navigant Capital Advisors, providing middle-market investment banking services to clients involved in merger and acquisition activities, capital restructurings and debt workouts. Previously, he worked in KPMG's Management Consulting practice. He began his career as an analyst with Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Advisors in New York.

Monthye earned his B.S. from Arizona State University and his M.B.A. from Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. He also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.



Christopher E. Freeburg
Vice President



Chris Freeburg has a professional background in private equity, strategy consulting, investment banking, and executive search. His transaction experience includes investing in and advising companies in the healthcare, technology, business services, and consumer products industries. Freeburg is responsible for originating, executing, and managing UIB Capital's portfolio investments, and serves on the board of Victron, Inc.

Prior to joining UIB, Freeburg served as Vice President with Healthios, Inc., a merchant banking boutique focused exclusively on healthcare, where he was involved with over 20 projects totaling $3 billion in enterprise value and $1 billion of equity capital. Before joining Healthios, Freeburg was at TA Associates, a leading private equity firm with $10 billion of capital under management. Over $120 million of capital was deployed in the transactions he was involved in and he invested in more than 30 deals while at TA. Prior to joining TA Associates, he worked in Corporate Finance and Mergers & Acquisitions with the investment bank of Robertson Stephens & Company. While at Robertson Stephens, Freeburg worked as a critical team member responsible for the firm's largest client at the time, helping to raise over $1 billion of capital for the company in 24 months. In total, he participated in more than 20 closed transactions during his tenure at Robertson Stephens.

Freeburg earned his B.A. at Stanford University and his M.B.A. from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.




Sachin Gupta
Vice President



Sachin Gupta has a background in private equity, operations, and consulting. He has worked on investment transactions in North America and globally, including in Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Gupta also has worked on the sell-side, having conducted M&A advisory and consulting work for various Fortune 500 clients. Gupta serves on the board for Ellington, LLC.

Prior to joining UIB, Gupta was an Investment Associate at Toucan Capital, a leading U.S.-based investor in biotechnology and healthcare services, where he worked on new growth equity and follow-on investments as well as in portfolio monitoring. While at Toucan Capital, he led efforts in emerging markets such as India and Thailand, and assisted portfolio companies with several cross-border business development initiatives.

Previously, Gupta served as an investment professional at VentureEast in Hyderabad, India, and at IllinoisVENTURES in Chicago, IL. He also spent time in the neurological group at Medtronic Inc. The co-founder of PhysiSense LLC, a medical device company focused on post-stroke rehabilitation, he is also co-founder of Uronistic Technologies, a diagnostic product company focused on the elderly market.

Gupta earned his M.B.A. from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern, his M.S. in Bioengineering from the University of Illinois, and his B.A. in Economics from University of Michigan.

 


Sam Habbas
Director


Sam Habbas has served as a member of UIB Capital's Board of Directors since its incorporation in July of 2004. He is presently a partner at Al-Sarraf & Al-Ruwayeh, the largest law firm in Kuwait and one of the largest in the Middle East. Habbas manages the firm's International department, which is the largest such department in Kuwait. Habbas's practice is focused primarily on corporate and commercial matters, and he acts as legal counsel for several large multinational companies. He has also acted as an arbitrator on a number of multinational arbitrations.

Habbas received his B.A. with honors at the University of Santa Clara and earned his J.D. at Boston College.



Ikbal Daredia
Director


Ikbal Daredia has over 20 years of experience in Islamic banking. Prior to joining Unicorn, he was the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Noriba, UBS’s global Islamic platform for Shariah-compliant products and services. Prior to his tenure at Noriba, Mr. Daredia was the Global Head of Islamic Financial Services for four years with ABN-Amro Bank in Bahrain. Mr. Daredia has originated and executed Shariah-compliant cross-border transactions structured in accordance with Islamic principles for sovereign entities and corporations in Turkey, the GCC countries, the Philippines, India, Pakistan and the United Kingdom. In 2007, he led the distribution efforts for two Sukuk offerings issued on behalf of a prominent Saudi corporation, with a total value of US$1.6 billion. He was also the Noriba project leader for the first-ever US$750 million Exchangeable Sukuk for Khazanah, Malaysia, and the first internationally rated corporate Sukuk for Sarawak Corporate Sukuk Inc. (Malaysia), a US$350 million offering which was jointly led by UBS Investment Bank and Noriba in 2004. Prior to this, in 2001, Mr. Daredia worked on the Sukuk issue for Kumpulan Guthrie, Malaysia. Mr. Daredia is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, England.
